what I think

These are the categories that most occupy my thoughts these days, and this is what I am thinking about them all right at the moment.

Music/Culture: Certain songs on the radio make me want to run, not because they're stupid or lame, even though lots of them make me want to run for that reason. But some make me want to run because they have an ugly spirit that sort of jumps out at me and hates me. I can't think of any specific example because don't keep track of them. Figuring this out is sometimes not very high on my list.

Countries/Travel: I miss London, and the countryside around it. I really want to go back there and spend a long time. And I love remembering Paris. Having been to Paris really does change your life!

Languages: Studying Latin is a fascinating new activity I've discovered. It's history is so interesting. Spanish is fun and easy compared with German and French, and it makes me feel good in the hot summer.

Passions: Having a burden for the lost is not the most fun sometimes, but things happen to build your faith.

Me: I like being tan and having glow-y white, sparkly fingernails to go with my lovely diamond ring and my Juicy Couture charm bracelet. I'm missing the thing in my brain that's supposed to get rhythm and translate it into my body. Still wondering what to do about that, as I practice and practice dancing.

Piano: I like sight reading Chopin nocturnes, now that I can. Practicing doesn't really scare me anymore. That's a relief. I can play jazz now. I work very hard at the rhythm, but the chords finally come more naturally.

Food: I want sushi, and to go to the Tipperary soon.

Family: We are all getting together soon.

Friends: I am about to take a break for a while.

Husband: We are so happy and finally unstressed!

Theology: Reading a lot, as always. Realizing that you can only learn from someone if you trust and respect them, and it takes a long time to find a preacher, writer, philosopher, theologian, etc. who can be trusted and respected.

God: He is faithful. All the time. He comes through. His Word means what it says to me.

My new favorite thing to do....

...is to upload pictures.

This is from when I had tea while making a peach strawberry pie while sitting on the living room floor watching Lord of the Rings. Here's another one:

While I was doing that, my Kince was sitting watching me, like this:

And this is what he saw:

That was also the day that we had this for dinner:

Sorry if this results in a bunch of picture-ful but content-less posts. I'm having so much fun!

The Ettiquette of English Puddings

That is the title of a small pink-striped recipe book I got for Christmas. Puddings (the British kind, which is more like a cake, if you've never seen one) are one of my fascinations. They are cute, usually small, homey, old-fashioned desserts. I guess British foods are known for being bland, and puddings don't seem an exception, at least the ones I've made, but the wine and brandy sauces might help that. Puddings are good though. Just simple and quite nice with tea, especially on cold, cloudy days.

Anyway, this morning when I got up, it was sufficiently cloudy and more than cold enough outside, so I picked out a recipe from my pink pudding book. It was called "Railway Pudding" and I chose it because the recipe went like this:

Mix well one tea cupful of flour, one tea cupful of sugar, half tea cupful of milk, one ounce butter, one egg and one teaspoonful of baking powder and put into a buttered tin, bake twenty minutes in quick oven, (which I guessed meant hot, after it baked 25 minutes at 350 and was still very mushy and doughy) cut in half, spread with jam, sprinkle sugar over.

That was it. I liked how it left me to figure out how big a teacup to use, what temperature to bake it at, and what kind of jam to use and all that. I used one of my actual tea cups to measure things, like the Fauna on Sleeping Beauty, (all I could find was spanish one :) only that's really what the recipe called for! After it baked, I turned it out onto a dinner plate and cut it so that it looked like a layer cake and put strawberry jam in the middle. It looked so cute and plummy and made me so happy. And the best thing was, when Steve woke up, and I showed it to him, he asked "Is it a well-behaved pudding?"

It is. I like it. If I ever learn to post pictures, I'll put one up.

glory, pumpkins, Eeyore and love

Alright, so I have been trying and trying to post this weekend. I have had so many lovely thoughts, but every time I try to blog, I just end up leaving it as a draft. I have too many thoughts, especially about C. S. Lewis. So here's just a little piece of all the things I was trying to write.

Saturday morning was cool and nice, so I took my tea set (with tea and cream and sugar in it!) outside and had tea on a blanket under a grove of trees. I was finishing C. S. Lewis's The Weight of Glory. I love, love, love how stunning the end is, and how realistic and honest Lewis is, even while he is tying together such lofty, lovely, scary thoughts. I cannot say all that it made me think, and you'll have to read it yourself if you really want to know about it, but here is one quote from the essay that always brings me out of myself and back to reality:

"There are no ordinary people. You have never talked to a mere mortal. Nations, cultures, arts, civilizations---these are mortal, and their life to ours is as the life of a gnat. It is immortals whom we joke with, work with, marry, snub, and exploit..."

On a different note, Steve and I have bought a huge pumpkin! It looks just like it came right out of a coloring book--it is such a perfect shape, and so orange, and has such a properly curving stem. It makes me so happy. I am going to make lots of pumpkin foods this fall. I have already been looking for recipes, and I found a soup, a pudding, and a stuffed pumpkin recipe that all sound very good and not too hard. :) I can't wait!

Today Steve went out to run some errands (he sometimes goes to Dillard's when they have a sale in the really tall men's dept.) Anyway, he came home with, among other things, seersucker shorts (this is too many parentheses, but I have to say, he loves seersucker, which I find quite funny) AND he also had a very non-Dillard's-looking bag. It was actually a bag from the Disney Store. He told me to open it, and inside was Eeyore! He got me an Eeyore stuffed animal for a surprise, and I thought it was just the sweetest thing ever. My very soft Eeyore is at the moment sitting on top of my very wonderful, great big pumpkin which, under the circumstances, looks even more coloring-book-ish.

What other random things have been on my mind? Well, we have again been very busy and I am thinking of taking a sort of break from "extracurricular" (I guess I mean extra-marriage, but that's not a word) activities in October, so that is something sort of nice. I am happy I got to have tea outside, but mostly I am so amazed and happy that I have married such a wonderful guy who buys me Eeyore stuffed animals and who, by his own admission, knows how much it means to me to have curly hair. Of course there are other more important reasons I love him, but wow. :)
